Chapter 3: The Footage Nobody Wanted to See
“Of course,” Victoria said, forcing a smile.
“I'm happy to explain everything.””
She lifted her chin and smoothed the front of her fuchsia dress.
“My only concern was the hotel's reputation. Your daughter walked into me, refused to apologize properly, and became aggressive when I corrected her.””
My father looked at my cheek.
Then at the phone still held by the guest near the lounge.
“Interesting,” he said.
“Because your version seems to be the opposite of what several people here witnessed.””
Victoria's smile tightened.
“People misunderstand situations all the time.””
“Then the recording should help us understand this one.””
My father turned toward Marcus.
“Where can we review the security footage?””
Marcus adjusted his jacket.
“Of course, sir. We have a security office on the lower level. I'll arrange for the footage to be reviewed by our team.””
“No.””
Marcus blinked.
“No, sir?””
“You will not arrange anything privately. I want the original recording preserved, along with the relevant access logs. Our operations director will oversee the review.””
My father's eyes moved to Eleanor Hayes, who had just entered the lobby carrying a tablet.
“Eleanor, please confirm that the footage has been secured.””
She nodded.
“It has, Mr. Brooks. I've placed a preservation hold on the relevant cameras, and the system records when authorized users access or export video.””
Marcus looked as though he'd swallowed something unpleasant.
“That's a little excessive for a misunderstanding,” Victoria said.
Eleanor turned toward her.
“An alleged assault is not a misunderstanding, Ms. Sterling. The recording will establish what happened.””
Victoria's cheeks flushed.
“Do you know how much business I bring to this hotel?””
Eleanor kept her voice professional.
“Business relationships don't change our procedures.””
“They should when the guest is someone important.””
My father regarded her steadily.
“Is that what you believe?””
Victoria hesitated.
“I believe people who contribute to a hotel's success deserve respect.””
“So do people who walk through its doors,” he replied.
“Especially when they are carrying a newborn.””
A murmur moved through the gathered guests.
I stood beside him, holding Grace securely against my chest. My cheek still hurt, but the pain had begun to fade beneath the strange clarity of the moment.
My father wasn't shouting.
He wasn't threatening anyone.
He was simply refusing to let them change the facts.
Marcus gestured toward the corridor.
“Mr. Brooks, perhaps we should discuss this privately. We don't want to alarm our guests.””
My father glanced around the lobby.
“You were perfectly comfortable humiliating my daughter in public. Why should the truth be discussed in private?””
Marcus's mouth tightened.
“Sir, I was acting on the information available to me.””
“Then tell me what information you gathered before ordering her out.””
“I spoke with Ms. Sterling.””
“And Danielle?””
Marcus hesitated.
“I asked for her side of the story.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“You asked me to leave. When I told you she had slapped me, you dismissed me.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Miss Brooks, I was trying to prevent the situation from escalating.””
“You could have asked the witnesses what happened.””
He had no answer.
My father turned to Eleanor.
“Let's review the footage.””
She led us toward a discreet security office behind the reception area. My father walked beside me, slowing his pace so I wouldn't have to hurry with Grace.
Before we reached the door, he stopped.
“Danielle, are you comfortable being present for this?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes, Dad. I want them to see what happened.””
He studied me for a moment, then squeezed my shoulder gently.
“All right.””
Inside the security office, a technician brought up the relevant camera feeds. The room smelled faintly of coffee and warm electronics. Several monitors showed different sections of the hotel: the entrance, the reception desk, the elevators, and the lounge.
Eleanor pointed to the central screen.
“This camera has a clear view of the incident.””
The technician moved the recording to the appropriate time.
We watched me enter the lobby with Grace and the food container.
We watched Victoria step into my path.
We watched me move aside.
Then Victoria raised her hand.
The slap was unmistakable.
No accidental collision.
No argument that could explain it.
She had deliberately struck me.
The recording continued.
It showed me securing Grace, catching the container, and standing motionless while Victoria pointed at me. It showed Marcus arriving and listening to Victoria without once examining the mark on my face.
Then it showed him ordering me to leave.
My father watched the screen without speaking.
When the recording ended, the technician replayed the final section at normal speed.
Marcus shifted in his chair.
“Sir, I acknowledge that the situation could have been handled better.””
My father finally turned toward him.
“Could have been handled better?””
“I should have taken a more balanced approach.””
“You watched a woman strike my daughter, then ordered my daughter to leave.””
“I didn't know she was your daughter.””
My father leaned forward slightly.
“That is precisely the problem.””
Marcus stared at him.
My father continued.
“If she had been an ordinary guest, would your decision have been acceptable?””
Marcus rubbed his palms against his trousers.
“No, sir.””
“Then why did you make it?””
“I believed I was protecting the hotel's reputation.””
“From what? The truth?””
Nobody moved.
I looked at Marcus, waiting for him to say something that might explain the way he had treated me.
Instead, he turned toward Victoria.
“Ms. Sterling assured me that Danielle had been aggressive.””
Victoria's head snapped around.
“You said you would handle this!””
“I did handle it.””
“You told me security would remove her!””
Eleanor stepped between them.
“Both of you need to stop. This is an internal investigation, not an opportunity to blame one another.””
My father nodded.
“Exactly. Preserve the original footage and document everyone's account. No one is to alter or delete any records. We will follow the company's disciplinary process, and any suspected assault will be handled through the appropriate authorities.””
Victoria looked at him in disbelief.
“You're going to ruin my reputation over one slap?””
“No,” my father replied.
“Your actions are responsible for your reputation. My responsibility is to ensure this hotel doesn't conceal them.””
She let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh.
“You cannot be serious. I have hosted charity galas here. I've brought influential people through these doors. I've spent a fortune at your properties.””
“And you believe that gives you permission to hit someone?””
“I was upset!””
“So was Danielle. She managed not to strike you.””
Victoria opened her mouth, but no words came.
Then my father looked at the technician.
“Is there anything else we need to see?””
The technician hesitated.
“There is another camera angle, sir. It covers the reception desk and part of the lounge. It also records audio from the desk area.””
“Show us.””
The screen changed.
This angle captured the moments immediately after Marcus arrived. The audio was clear enough to hear his instructions to the receptionist and Victoria's demand that the staff remove me.
Then something unexpected happened.
After I had stepped beside the column to make my phone call, Marcus had approached Victoria near the reception desk.
The technician increased the volume.
Marcus's recorded voice filled the small room.
“Don't worry, Ms. Sterling. I'll make sure this doesn't become a problem for you.””
Victoria's voice followed.
“Good. The last thing I need is some woman with a baby creating a scene in front of my guests.””
Marcus replied, “I'll have her removed before anyone important notices.””
The room became very still.
I slowly turned toward him.
My father didn't move at all.
On the screen, the recording continued.
Victoria leaned closer to Marcus and said something that made Eleanor reach for the desk.
“Besides,” Victoria's recorded voice said, “you still owe me for what I did to help you get this position.””
Marcus's face drained of color.
My father looked at Eleanor.
“Pause the recording.””
The technician stopped the video.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then my father turned to Marcus.
“What did she mean when she said you owed her for helping you get this position?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Sir, that's a private matter unrelated to the incident.””
“Perhaps. But it may be relevant to your decision to protect her.””
“It isn't what it sounds like.””
“Then explain it.””
Marcus looked toward the door, as if he were calculating whether he could escape the room without being stopped.
Victoria suddenly stood.
“That's enough. I won't sit here while you interrogate me.””
Eleanor stepped toward the door before she could reach it.
“Ms. Sterling, no one is preventing you from leaving. However, we need your contact information and a statement before you go.””
Victoria glared at her.
“I don't give statements to employees.””
My father rose from his chair.
“Then you'll give one to the appropriate authorities if they request it.””
She stared at him.
“You can't do this to me.””
He met her gaze.
“I haven't done anything to you. We've watched a recording of what you did to my daughter.””
Victoria's eyes flickered toward the frozen image on the monitor.
For the first time, she seemed to understand that money, connections, and a carefully maintained public image could not erase what a camera had recorded.
But the recording had revealed more than an assault.
It had revealed a relationship between Victoria and Marcus that neither of them wanted examined.
My father looked at Eleanor.
“Find out exactly how Marcus was appointed to this hotel, and whether Ms. Sterling had any involvement. I want the relevant correspondence, hiring records, and conflict-of-interest disclosures preserved.””
Eleanor nodded.
“I'll begin immediately.””
Marcus stood abruptly.
“Mr. Brooks, please. There are things you don't understand.””
My father looked at him.
“Then this is your opportunity to explain.””
Marcus glanced at Victoria.
She stared back at him with a warning in her eyes.
He lowered his voice.
“Sir, if you investigate how I got this position, you'll discover that Ms. Sterling isn't the only person who could be implicated.””
My father went silent.
And for the first time that day, I saw something other than anger in his expression.
Concern.
Because Marcus wasn't denying what he had done.
He was warning us that the hotel might be hiding something much bigger than one woman's cruelty.

And when Eleanor opened the first personnel file, the name on the document beneath Marcus Reed's appointment letter was not Victoria Sterling's.
It was someone my father had trusted for more than twenty years.
