Chapter 9: The Name on the Inheritance

The Mitchell estate was no longer a home.

It had become a crime scene made of memories.

Preston stood in his mother's study, holding the original birth certificate.

Nyla sat beside the desk, listening to the silence left behind by Marcus's phone call.

Brianna paced near the window.

Aunt Denise had called an attorney and was waiting for instructions.

Nobody knew what to believe.

Finally, Preston turned toward Brianna.

"What did Marcus mean?""

Brianna stopped walking.

"I don't know everything.""

"Start with what you know.""

She swallowed.

"Marcus contacted me about six months ago.""

Preston's expression hardened.

"Before you got pregnant?""

"Yes.""

"What did he want?""

"He told me Russell had been hiding money from the family. He said there was a trust that would become available when you had a male heir.""

Preston frowned.

"What trust?""

Brianna reached into her purse.

She removed a folded document.

"Marcus sent me this.""

Preston took it.

The document was a copy of a trust agreement established by his grandfather.

The original beneficiary was Thomas Carter.

But following Thomas's death, the agreement had been amended.

The new beneficiary was listed as:

*THE FIRST MALE DESCENDANT OF THOMAS CARTER BEARING THE MITCHELL FAMILY NAME.*

Preston read it twice.

Then he looked at Nyla.

"That means me.""

Nyla nodded slowly.

"You're Thomas's biological son.""

Preston looked at the document again.

"Why would my grandfather leave an inheritance to Thomas?""

Denise answered.

"Because Thomas helped build the company. Your grandfather respected him. He knew Margaret loved him.""

She took a breath.

"Your grandfather never believed Russell should inherit everything.""

Preston turned toward her.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Because Russell controlled the documents after your grandfather died.""

Preston placed the agreement on the desk.

"And the baby?""

Brianna sat down.

"Marcus told me the trust could be challenged if you had no male heir. He wanted me to make sure you believed the child was yours.""

Preston's face hardened.

"So this entire pregnancy was part of his plan?""

"No. I got pregnant because I wanted a family.""

"With me or with the Mitchell money?""

Brianna covered her face.

"Both.""

Nyla looked away.

There was something almost unbearable about watching another woman make the same mistake she had once made: believing that being chosen by Preston meant being loved.

But Brianna had crossed lines Nyla never would have considered.

Preston pointed at the trust document.

"Why does the child need to carry my name?""

Brianna looked up.

"Because the trust specifically says the heir must bear the Mitchell name.""

Preston laughed.

"My grandfather created an inheritance for a Carter child, and Russell changed the name to make sure he controlled it?""

Denise nodded.

"That's what it appears to be.""

Nyla looked at the document.

"But why would Marcus want you to have a son?""

Preston turned toward Brianna.

"Is that why you wanted the baby named after me?""

Brianna nodded.

"Marcus said the name was important.""

Preston looked at her in disbelief.

"You wanted to name him Preston Mitchell Jr. because of a legal condition?""

She began crying.

"I thought if the baby carried your name, everything would be secure.""

"Secure for whom?""

She had no answer.

An hour later, Preston received a message.

It contained an address and a single sentence.

*Come alone if you want to know what happened to Thomas Carter.*

The sender was Marcus Mitchell.

Preston showed the message to Nyla.

"I'm going.""

"No.""

"Nyla—"

"You have no idea who this man is.""

"He's my brother.""

"Half-brother, apparently. That doesn't make him trustworthy.""

Preston looked at the message.

"I need answers.""

Nyla stood.

"Then we get them together.""

Preston hesitated.

"You don't have to involve yourself.""

She gave him a cold look.

"My father is involved. My mother-in-law is involved. My name is in the ledger. You don't get to tell me this isn't my business.""

He nodded.

They agreed to meet Marcus at a private restaurant in downtown Dallas.

Marcus was already seated when they arrived.

He was forty-two, tall, well-dressed, and carried himself with the confidence of someone who had spent years watching other people inherit opportunities he believed belonged to him.

He stood when Preston approached.

"Brother.""

Preston didn't shake his hand.

"Don't call me that until I know what you are.""

Marcus smiled.

"Still dramatic. You really are Russell's son in some ways.""

Preston sat.

Nyla remained standing.

Marcus looked at her.

"Thomas's daughter.""

"That's right.""

He nodded.

"Your father was a good man.""

Nyla's eyes narrowed.

"You knew him?""

"Better than you think.""

Marcus opened a leather folder.

Inside were financial statements, correspondence, and photographs.

He slid one photograph toward Preston.

It showed Russell standing outside a hospital.

Thomas was visible through a window.

The date was printed on the back.

The day before Thomas's surgery.

Preston looked up.

"Where did you get this?""

"From my mother.""

"Who was your mother?""

Marcus leaned back.

"Another woman Russell promised to marry.""

Nyla felt her stomach tighten.

"How many women did this man deceive?""

Marcus smiled without humor.

"Enough to build a second family.""

Preston looked at the photograph.

"Did Russell have something to do with Thomas's death?""

Marcus took a sip of water.

"Your mother believed he did.""

"That's not an answer.""

"It's the only one I have.""

Nyla leaned forward.

"Then why did you contact Brianna?""

Marcus looked at her.

"Because Russell was planning to steal the inheritance.""

"You mean the inheritance you wanted?""

"Yes.""

He didn't deny it.

Marcus continued.

"My mother spent twenty years believing Russell would acknowledge me publicly. He never did. He paid for my education, my apartment, and my business, but he refused to give me his name.""

Preston stared.

"And you wanted to use me?""

"I wanted the trust activated.""

"By making me believe I was having a son?""

Marcus shrugged.

"The trust required a male heir. Russell had spent decades hiding the original documents. Brianna was supposed to help me get access.""

Nyla shook her head.

"You manipulated her.""

Marcus smiled.

"She was willing.""

Brianna's earlier tears suddenly made sense.

She hadn't simply been afraid of losing Preston.

She had been afraid of losing the future she had been promised.

Preston pushed the folder away.

"What happens to the inheritance now?""

Marcus's expression changed.

"That's the interesting part.""

He removed one final document.

It was a page from the original trust agreement.

At the bottom was a clause that neither Preston nor Nyla had seen before.

Marcus pointed to it.

"The inheritance doesn't automatically go to the first male descendant who carries the Mitchell name.""

Preston read the sentence.

His face changed.

"What does this mean?""

Marcus smiled.

"It means the inheritance belongs to Thomas Carter's first surviving child.""

Nyla stared.

"That's me.""

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly.""

Preston looked between them.

"My grandfather left everything to Nyla?""

"Not exactly everything," Marcus replied.

"But a controlling interest in Mitchell Holdings.""

Nyla sat down slowly.

For years, the Mitchell family had treated her as an outsider.

Russell had humiliated her.

Preston had abandoned her.

Brianna had invited her to a celebration designed to make her feel worthless.

Yet the entire time, the person they had been trying to exclude was the rightful heir to the company.

Preston looked at Marcus.

"Why tell us now?""

Marcus's smile disappeared.

"Because Russell knows.""

Nyla frowned.

"Knows what?""

Marcus leaned closer.

"He's already filed documents to transfer the company shares.""

Preston stood.

"When?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

Nyla looked at the papers.

"Then why are you telling us?""

Marcus reached into his folder and removed another envelope.

"Because I have the original will.""

He placed it in front of Nyla.

She opened it.

The first page contained Thomas's signature.

The second contained a legal description of the estate.

The third contained a name.

*SOLE EXECUTOR AND PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: NYLA CARTER.*

Nyla stared at the page.

Then she noticed the final paragraph.

It stated that the inheritance would remain protected only if the original biological parentage records were presented to the probate court.

Preston looked at her.

"We need to file this immediately.""

Marcus shook his head.

"There's a problem.""

"What?""

"The original hospital record is missing.""

Nyla looked at the document Brianna had brought.

"She gave us a copy.""

"Copies can be challenged. Russell has already claimed the original was destroyed.""

Marcus paused.

"But I know where it is.""

Preston leaned forward.

"Where?""

Marcus looked directly at Nyla.

"In Russell's private safe.""

Nyla's phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Russell sitting inside his study.

On the desk in front of him was a document.

Beside it was a lighter.

The message contained only eight words:

*HE KNOWS YOU HAVE THE WILL. HE'S BURNING THE ORIGINAL.*

Nyla stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.

Preston grabbed his jacket.

Marcus reached for the folder.

But before they could leave, another message arrived.

This one contained a photograph of Brianna.

She was sitting in the back of a black SUV.

Her hands were tied.

And beneath the photograph was a sentence that made Preston's blood run cold.

*TELL NYLA TO BRING THE WILL, OR BRIANNA DOESN'T COME HOME.*

Nyla stared at the image.

Marcus slowly put his phone away.

Preston turned toward him.

"Did you do this?""

Marcus didn't answer.

May you like

Then he smiled.

"Now we finally have something worth negotiating.""
