Chapter 7: The Signature That Could Destroy Her Future

Andre placed the venue confirmation flat on the conference table.
Nobody moved.
Alicia stood beside him, staring at the forged signature beneath her name.
She had spent years building her bakery from a tiny rented kitchen into a business with regular customers, corporate orders, and three employees.
Every dollar mattered.
Every contract mattered.
And now someone had attached her name to a financial obligation she had never agreed to.
“Mom,” Andre said slowly, “explain this document.””
Cynthia crossed her arms.
“I already told you. It's a preliminary reservation.””
“Why is Alicia listed as the financial guarantor?””
“Because she's going to be your wife.””
“That doesn't answer my question.””
Cynthia sighed.
“Someone had to provide the financial information. The venue needed reassurance that the wedding could be paid for.””
Andre stared at her.
“So you used her name.””
“I used the information available to me.””
Alicia shook her head.
“You didn't have my permission.””
Cynthia turned toward her.
“Don't be so dramatic. Nothing has happened.””
“Not yet.””
“Exactly. So stop acting as if I've ruined your life.””
Alicia picked up the document.
There was a reference number at the bottom and a phone number for the venue's finance department.
“Did you provide my bank details?””
Cynthia looked away.
That small movement answered more than any explanation could.
Andre pulled out his phone.
“I'm calling them.””
Cynthia immediately reached for his wrist.
“Don't.””
He looked at her hand.
“Let go.””
“Andre, think about what you're doing.””
“I am thinking.””
He gently removed her hand and dialed the number.
The call connected after several rings.
“Good evening, Harper Events, how may I help you?””
“Hello. My name is Andre Harper. I'm calling about a wedding reservation under my name and Alicia Bennett's.””
“Certainly, sir. May I have your reservation reference?””
Andre read the number.
The employee typed something.
“Yes, I have the file. What can I help you with?””
“I need to know whether Alicia Bennett is listed as a guarantor.””
“Yes, sir. Ms. Bennett is listed as the primary financial guarantor.””
Andre closed his eyes briefly.
“And has a deposit been made?””
“Yes. A payment of two thousand dollars was received.””
“Who made the payment?””
There was a pause.
“It was submitted through a bank transfer.””
“Under whose name?””
“Cynthia Harper.””
Andre looked directly at his mother.
“Thank you. One more question. Was the guarantor's authorization verified?””
Another pause.
“Our system shows that a signed authorization was uploaded with the reservation.””
Alicia's fingers tightened around the document.
Andre continued.
“Was it verified directly with Ms. Bennett?””
“I'd need to review the file notes.””
“Please do.””
The employee typed again.
Then she spoke more carefully.
“Sir, the file notes indicate that the guarantor's authorization was submitted by the event organizer. We have not completed independent identity verification.””
Andre looked at Alicia.
“Please place a hold on the reservation. The named guarantor disputes the authorization.””
“Certainly. I can flag the account for review.””
“Thank you.””
He ended the call.
Cynthia stared at him.
“You've just put the entire wedding at risk.””
Andre put his phone down.
“No. Someone submitted false information. I'm trying to stop it.””
Cynthia stood.
“You're going to destroy everything your father and I have worked for!””
Alicia looked at her.
“Why would my signature be necessary if you were paying for the wedding?””
Cynthia hesitated.
Then Brielle spoke from the doorway.
“Because Mom said the venue wouldn't approve the payment plan without someone with a stronger financial profile.””
Everyone turned.
Brielle had been standing there for several minutes.
Cynthia's expression darkened.
“Brielle, stay out of this.””
But Brielle continued.
“She said Alicia's bakery made enough money to qualify.””
Alicia felt her stomach drop.
Andre turned toward his sister.
“How do you know that?””
“Mom asked me to help with the reservation forms.””
“You helped her?””
Brielle nodded reluctantly.
“She told me it was normal.””
Cynthia slammed her handbag onto the table.
“That's enough!””
Brielle flinched.
But this time, she didn't retreat.
“You also asked me to find Alicia's business registration number.””
Alicia looked at her.
“When?””
“Last month. Mom said she needed it for the wedding planning.””
Andre slowly turned toward Cynthia.
“You've been collecting her business information for months?””
Cynthia rubbed her forehead.
“I was preparing for the future.””
“What future?””
“Our family!””
Andre shook his head.
“Mom, you don't get to call something family when you have to forge documents to make it happen.””
Cynthia's face twisted.
“I did all this because I wanted you to have a beautiful wedding!””
Alicia placed the document back on the table.
“Then why didn't you ask us what we could afford?””
Cynthia looked at her.
“Because you would have refused.””
Alicia went silent.
There it was.
The truth.
Cynthia hadn't asked because she didn't want an answer she couldn't control.
Andre walked toward the door.
“We're leaving.””
Cynthia followed.
“Don't you dare walk out on me.””
He stopped.
“Mom, I'm not abandoning you. I'm refusing to participate in this.””
“You're choosing her!””
“I'm choosing what's right.””
Cynthia's eyes filled with tears.
“After everything I've done for you?””
Andre looked exhausted.
“I know you've sacrificed for me. But that doesn't mean you own my future.””
Alicia reached for his hand.
They walked out together.
Behind them, Cynthia called his name twice.
He didn't turn around.
In the reception hall, several relatives were still waiting.
Richard approached immediately.
“Did you get an explanation?””
Andre nodded.
“There's a problem with the wedding reservation. My mother listed Alicia as a financial guarantor without her authorization.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“That's serious.””
Eleanor looked at Alicia.
“Sweetheart, do you need help?””
“Thank you. I think I need to understand exactly what has been submitted under my name first.””
Richard nodded.
“Keep every document. Don't sign anything until you've checked it.””
Alicia thanked him.
Then she looked toward the cake display one last time.
Her creation was still standing beneath the lights.
Beautiful.
Untouched.
And completely disconnected from the woman who had made it.
As Andre reached for the exit, his phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from the venue.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: Additional Financial Documents Required.*
Andre opened it.
His expression changed.
“What is it?”” Alicia asked.
He turned the screen toward her.
The venue had received another document that afternoon.
A financial authorization.
It stated that Alicia had agreed to provide a substantial contribution toward the wedding expenses.
At the bottom was the same signature.
But this time, there was something even more disturbing.
The document included a copy of Alicia's business account statement.
A statement she had never given Cynthia.
Andre looked at her.
“Who else has access to your financial information?””
Alicia couldn't answer.
Because she suddenly remembered something.
Three weeks earlier, someone had borrowed her laptop at the bakery.
May you like
Someone who had claimed to be helping with the wedding invitations.
And that person had been Brielle.
