Chapter 5: The Husband Who Tried to Steal Her Future
The following morning, Claire arrived at her company's headquarters at 8:15 a.m.
The building stood in the financial district, its glass exterior reflecting the pale morning sun.
Whitmore Holdings occupied the top three floors.
Employees greeted Claire as she stepped out of the elevator.
"Good morning, Mrs. Whitmore.""
"Morning, Claire.""
"Good morning.""
She smiled at each person, but her thoughts were elsewhere.
Inside the executive conference room, Michael was waiting with two additional attorneys and the company's chief financial officer, Robert Hayes.
Robert placed a thick file on the table.
"We found the transaction.""
Claire sat down.
"Show me.""
Robert opened his laptop.
"Three months ago, someone submitted a request to transfer a portion of your ownership interest to a newly established investment entity.""
Claire frowned.
"Which entity?""
"Northbridge Capital Partners.""
Michael exchanged a glance with Robert.
"Do you recognize the name?""
"No.""
Robert turned the screen toward her.
The proposed beneficiary was Daniel Whitmore.
Claire leaned closer.
"How much?""
"Thirty percent of your controlling interest.""
For a moment, she couldn't speak.
Then she asked, "Who authorized it?""
Robert opened another document.
"The request was submitted using your digital signature.""
Claire's face became still.
"I didn't sign this.""
"We know," Michael replied.
"Then how did they get it?""
Robert hesitated.
"Someone accessed an archived corporate authorization file. The signature appears to have been copied from a document you signed several years ago.""
Claire looked at Michael.
"Can they legally transfer anything?""
"No. The request was rejected because it lacked the required verification. But we have preserved the submission records.""
Claire folded her hands.
"Who submitted it?""
Robert brought up the access logs.
"Daniel's office network.""
Silence filled the room.
Claire looked at the screen for a long time.
She remembered Daniel sitting across from her at their kitchen island, asking her to sign what he called routine paperwork.
She remembered him kissing her forehead afterward.
"You're the smartest person I know," he had said.
Apparently, he had been studying her signature while telling her that.
Michael closed the file.
"This is potentially a serious matter. We should refer it for a formal investigation.""
Claire nodded.
"Do it.""
Robert looked uncomfortable.
"There's another issue.""
"Go ahead.""
"Daniel's company has been attempting to obtain additional financing using projected distributions from Whitmore Holdings.""
Claire raised her eyes.
"Without my approval?""
"Yes.""
"How much?""
"Approximately $4.7 million.""
Michael leaned forward.
"That's not all. We found correspondence suggesting that Daniel represented himself as having a beneficial ownership interest in your company.""
Claire looked down at the papers.
Four years.
Four years of believing she was building a life with a man who respected her.
She had paid his debts, helped his business, and supported his family.
Now she was discovering that he had been treating her success as something he was entitled to take.
"Prepare everything," she said.
Michael nodded.
"Everything?""
"Every contract. Every transfer. Every unauthorized request. I want the complete record.""
Robert closed his laptop.
"Understood.""
Claire stood.
"And Robert?""
"Yes?""
"Make sure the employees' salaries and benefits remain protected. Daniel's company is not my responsibility, but the people who work here are.""
Robert smiled faintly.
"That's already been handled.""
At eleven that morning, Daniel arrived at Whitmore Holdings.
He wore the same black suit from the previous evening, though his tie was loose and his eyes were bloodshot.
The receptionist stood as he approached.
"Good morning, Mr. Whitmore.""
"I need to see my wife.""
"Do you have an appointment?""
He stared at her.
"Do I look like I need an appointment to see my own wife?""
"I'm sorry, sir. Mrs. Whitmore is in a meeting.""
"Then tell her I'm here.""
The receptionist picked up the phone.
A moment later, she replaced the receiver.
"Mrs. Whitmore has asked that you wait.""
Daniel sat down.
Twenty minutes passed.
Then thirty.
Finally, the elevator doors opened.
Claire stepped into the lobby with Michael beside her.
Daniel immediately stood.
"Claire.""
She stopped.
"Daniel.""
He looked at her, then at Michael.
"Can we talk alone?""
"No.""
His jaw tightened.
"I'm your husband.""
"That doesn't give you the right to access my business.""
He looked startled.
"What are you talking about?""
Claire turned to Michael.
"Show him the documents.""
Michael opened his briefcase and handed Daniel a folder.
Daniel flipped through it.
His expression changed as he reached the transfer request.
"Where did you get this?""
"From our company's security records," Michael replied.
Daniel looked at Claire.
"You're misunderstanding something.""
"Then explain it.""
He swallowed.
"It was only a preliminary proposal.""
"Using my signature?""
"I was trying to create an investment opportunity.""
"With thirty percent of my company?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Claire, listen. We were married. I thought we could share the benefits.""
She stared at him.
"Did you ever ask me?""
He said nothing.
"Did you tell me you were trying to transfer my shares?""
"Things were complicated.""
"No, Daniel. They were simple. You wanted something that belonged to me, and you thought I wouldn't notice.""
He stepped closer.
"Don't talk to me like I'm a criminal.""
Michael moved slightly between them.
"Mr. Whitmore, I suggest you keep your distance.""
Daniel ignored him.
"Claire, please. Whatever happened last night, we can fix it.""
Claire looked at him.
"Last night wasn't the problem.""
"Then what is?""
"The problem is that I finally understand what our marriage meant to you.""
Daniel's face tightened.
"You can't throw away four years because of one mistake.""
"One mistake?""
She opened her handbag and removed a printed email.
"This was sent to your mother six weeks ago.""
Daniel glanced at it.
His eyes widened.
It was a message discussing the proposed transfer.
The sender was his personal email address.
The recipient was Evelyn.
The subject line read:
*PROJECT: CONTROL OF CLAIRE'S ASSETS.*
Daniel looked sick.
"Who gave you that?""
"Your mother did.""
He shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
Claire's voice remained steady.
"She sent it to me this morning.""
Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
MOTHER.
He answered.
"What?""
Evelyn's voice was frantic.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"At Claire's office.""
"Come home immediately.""
"Why?""
"Someone from the bank is here.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"What bank?""
"The bank that financed the house.""
He looked at Claire.
"What happened?""
Evelyn lowered her voice.
"They're saying the mortgage guarantee has been withdrawn. They want to speak to the actual owner.""
Daniel's blood ran cold.
"Tell them I'll be there.""
He ended the call.
Then he turned to Claire.
"Please. You can't let them take the house.""
Claire looked at him for a long moment.
"Daniel, I didn't take your house.""
She paused.
"I stopped paying for one that was never mine.""
That afternoon, Evelyn sat in the drawing room of the family estate.
Two bank representatives were seated across from her.
A third person, a property solicitor, had placed a document on the coffee table.
Evelyn refused to touch it.
"This is a misunderstanding," she said.
The senior representative adjusted his glasses.
"Mrs. Whitmore, the financing agreement is quite clear.""
"My late husband built this house!""
"According to the land registry, the property is held through a company controlled by Claire Whitmore.""
Evelyn stood.
"She is my daughter-in-law!""
"That doesn't alter the registered ownership.""
The front door opened.
Daniel entered.
"What's happening?""
Evelyn rushed toward him.
"Tell them they can't do this!""
The bank representative stood.
"Mr. Whitmore, we need to discuss the outstanding loan and the status of the security agreement.""
Daniel glanced at the paperwork.
Then he noticed something.
The property had not merely been used as collateral.
It had been transferred into a holding structure before the mortgage was refinanced.
And Claire was listed as the sole controlling owner.
He looked at his mother.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Evelyn's expression crumbled.
Before she could answer, the solicitor placed another envelope on the table.
"This document concerns the original purchase of the estate.""
Daniel opened it.
The buyer's name was clearly printed.
Claire Elizabeth Whitmore.
But the purchase date was even more shocking.
It was dated six months before Daniel had proposed to her.
Daniel slowly looked up.
May you like
His mother whispered, "She bought it before she even became a Whitmore.""
And suddenly, the family home, the family reputation, and the family fortune all looked very different.
