Chapter 4: The Email They Didn't Want Her to Read

Renee kept her eyes on the highlighted sentence.

“Before Mrs. Reed arrives, we need to make sure the school has sufficient grounds to recommend a formal behavioral intervention.””

She read it again.

Then she looked at Benton.

“What does that mean?””

Benton extended her hand.

“That's an internal administrative communication. It has been taken out of context.””

Renee didn't release the paper.

“Then put it into context.””

Benton's fingers remained extended.

“Denise, please return that document to my office.””

Denise looked uncomfortable.

“I printed it because you asked me to attach it to the disciplinary packet.””

“Which is exactly why I don't want it circulating without explanation.””

Ms. Parker stepped closer.

“Why was a behavioral intervention being discussed before today's incident?””

Benton adjusted the collar of her jacket.

“We had received concerns about Jada's conduct.””

“What concerns?”” Renee asked.

“Disruptive behavior. Difficulty following instructions. An inappropriate attitude toward staff.””

Jada shook her head.

“That's not true.””

Benton turned toward her.

“Jada, please allow your mother and me to speak.””

Renee raised one hand.

“Actually, I want her to speak. She's the person you're discussing.””

Jada looked at her mother.

Then she looked at Benton.

“Last Thursday, Mr. Collins told me to move my science project because it was taking up too much space. I asked him where he wanted me to put it.””

Benton sighed.

“This is not the time.””

Jada continued.

“He said I was questioning him. I wasn't. I just didn't want my project to get broken.””

Ms. Parker frowned.

“What happened to the project?””

Jada swallowed.

“He put it in the storage room.””

Renee looked at her daughter.

“Did you tell me that?””

“I didn't want you to worry. I thought maybe I had done something wrong.””

Ms. Parker turned toward Benton.

“That's the complaint?””

“I didn't say that.””

“Then show us the actual complaint.””

Benton gathered the papers.

“I am not obligated to disclose every staff communication during an informal meeting.””

Renee took a breath.

“Then let's make it formal.””

Benton looked up.

“What?””

“I want copies of every document concerning my daughter. Every complaint. Every disciplinary note.

Every recommendation. And I want the date each one was created.””

Benton's expression tightened.

“Those records must be handled through the proper process.””

“Fine. Tell me the process, and I'll follow it.””

Ms. Parker nodded.

“That's reasonable.””

Benton looked toward the secretary.

“Denise, please leave the documents here.””

Denise hesitated.

“Principal Benton, the email was sent to me yesterday at 4:42 p.m. You specifically instructed me to prepare a parent notification packet.””

“That's enough.””

Denise looked at Renee.

“I also have the original message.””

Benton stood.

“Denise, you are an administrative assistant. You are not authorized to interpret disciplinary decisions.””

“I know,” Denise replied quietly.

“I'm just telling Mrs. Reed what I received.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Miles raised his hand.

“Can I say something?””

Benton closed her eyes briefly.

“Miles, we have already discussed your statement.””

“But this is about Jada.””

“What about it?””

Miles looked at Renee.

“Jada helped me last week, too.””

Jada turned toward him.

“What?””

He nodded.

“Remember when my bag fell near the library?””

Jada nodded slowly.

“I picked it up.””

“And when Mr. Collins told you to stop walking with me because you were supposed to be going to class?””

Jada remembered.

She had been helping Miles collect his books after someone knocked them off his wheelchair tray.

Mr. Collins had told her she was late.

She had tried to explain.

He had called her argumentative.

Miles continued.

“She was helping me then, too.””

Renee looked at Ms. Parker.

“Is there a pattern here?””

Ms. Parker folded her arms.

“I've noticed that Jada often gets corrected when she tries to explain herself. I've spoken to her about choosing the right moment to speak, but I've never seen her behave aggressively.””

Benton immediately responded.

“Being helpful does not give a student permission to disregard school instructions.””

“Agreed,” Ms. Parker said.

“But neither does being an administrator give someone permission to misrepresent what happened.””

Benton's face reddened.

Renee placed the email on the desk.

“I'm not leaving until I understand why you were discussing a disciplinary intervention before my daughter was accused of anything.””

Benton sat down.

“Mrs. Reed, I believe we're getting distracted by administrative language.””

“Then answer in plain English.””

Benton stared at her.

“The school was considering additional support for Jada.””

“Support?””

“Yes.””

“Why does the email say sufficient grounds?””

Benton didn't answer.

Renee looked at the highlighted paragraph again.

The next line was even more troubling.

It read:

If the student continues challenging staff authority, parent involvement may be necessary to establish clear consequences.

Renee slowly placed the paper flat on the desk.

“You weren't planning to ask me how to support my daughter.””

Benton's voice hardened.

“That's an unfair interpretation.””

“You were planning to build a case against her.””

“Absolutely not.””

“Then why did you write that?””

Benton looked toward Ms. Parker.

“This meeting has become confrontational.””

Renee gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“My daughter came here to explain why she helped a boy in a wheelchair. Somehow we're now discussing a disciplinary plan that was created before the incident.””

Jada's eyes filled again.

“Mom, am I going to get suspended?””

Renee immediately turned.

“No, sweetheart. Nobody has shown us a reason you should be.””

Benton picked up the original report.

“I have not issued a suspension.””

“But you were considering one,” Ms. Parker said.

“I was considering appropriate consequences.””

“For what?”” Renee demanded.

Benton's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Denise slowly stepped backward.

“Principal Benton, there's something else.””

Benton turned.

“What now?””

“The email you sent yesterday wasn't the only one.””

Renee looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Denise held the tablet against her chest.

“There was another message this morning. Before Jada was brought into this office.””

Benton stood so quickly her chair struck the cabinet behind her.

“Denise. Do not.””

May you like

But Denise had already unlocked the tablet.

And when she read the sender's name, Renee realized that the plan to punish her daughter might have started with someone else entirely.
