Chapter 5: My Brother's Price

Daniel pulled out a chair and sat down as if he owned the house.

He poured himself a glass of wine.

Then he looked at me with an expression I hadn't seen since childhood.

Pity.

"Marcus, you were always the sentimental one," he said.

"Dad knew that.""

I remained standing.

"What does that have to do with the money?""

"Everything.""

He took a sip.

"You think Dad built that business because he loved restaurants? He built it because he understood people. He knew how to make money, how to protect assets, and how to keep control.""

Richard interrupted.

"Daniel, this conversation concerns unauthorized payments.""

Daniel waved him off.

"Richard, with respect, this is between family.""

Richard didn't move.

"I'm representing Sterling Hospitality's interests. It became my business when company funds were transferred without proper authorization.""

Daniel smiled.

"Then perhaps you should understand the bigger picture before making accusations.""

He turned toward me.

"Your father didn't trust you with the business.""

I felt the words hit harder than I expected.

Daniel continued.

"He knew you were more interested in building houses and fixing construction problems than managing a hospitality empire.""

I swallowed.

"That's why he appointed you as an operating adviser. Not because you were better. Because he needed someone responsible enough to handle the paperwork.""

"That's not what happened.""

Daniel leaned back.

"Really? Did Dad ever tell you why I wasn't given the majority shares?""

I didn't answer.

He smiled.

"Because he knew I'd challenge him.""

Richard opened his folder.

"Daniel, the ownership records are quite clear.""

Daniel ignored him.

"Marcus, you inherited the controlling interest because Dad thought you wouldn't interfere. You were supposed to let professionals run the company.""

I nodded slowly.

"And you thought that meant you could take money from it?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I thought I deserved compensation.""

"For what?""

"For the years I worked with Dad!""

His voice echoed across the room.

He stood.

"I was there when he opened the second restaurant. I was there when he negotiated the hotel partnership. I spent weekends at the office while you were building your little construction career.""

I looked at him.

"You left the company twelve years ago.""

"Because Dad made it impossible for me to advance.""

"He offered you a management position.""

"An insulting position.""

"He offered you a salary.""

"I deserved ownership.""

There it was.

The truth Daniel had been carrying for years.

He hadn't been helping Denise.

He had been using her.

I looked at the bank records.

"How much did you take?""

Daniel laughed.

"You're obsessed with the number.""

"Answer me.""

He placed both hands on the table.

"One hundred and seventy-three thousand dollars. Maybe a little more. I don't have the exact figure.""

Denise stared at him.

"You told me it was only forty-eight thousand.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Don't start.""

"You said the other payments were reimbursements.""

"They were.""

"For what?""

"Expenses!""

"What expenses, Daniel?""

He leaned toward her.

"Do you want to do this here?""

I stepped between them.

"Yes. I do.""

Daniel looked at me.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""

"No.""

"You've finally got an audience. Your wife is crying, her boss is watching, and you're pretending to be the victim.""

I shook my head.

"I'm not pretending anything.""

I opened the black folder and removed a document.

"This is the ownership agreement.""

Daniel glanced at it.

"What about it?""

"Your father established an independent financial oversight provision when he transferred control to me.""

He frowned.

I continued.

"Every transaction above twenty-five thousand dollars requires two independent approvals. One from the operating company and one from the holding company.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"That's old paperwork.""

"It's still active.""

He looked at Richard.

Richard nodded.

"I can confirm that.""

I placed another page on the table.

"These transactions were divided into smaller payments to avoid the approval threshold.""

Daniel said nothing.

"Someone knew exactly what they were doing.""

Denise began shaking her head.

"Daniel, you told me everything was approved.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Denise, I said I would handle it.""

"You told me there was nothing illegal.""

"I never used that word.""

Her face crumpled.

"You promised me the money was mine.""

Daniel looked at her with open irritation.

"You received your share, didn't you?""

The room went silent.

I turned toward Denise.

"Your share?""

She looked down.

Daniel immediately realized what he had said.

"That's not what I meant.""

I asked quietly, "How much did you receive?""

Denise wiped her cheeks.

"Twenty thousand.""

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

"Denise...""

"It was for additional work," she insisted.

"I wasn't trying to steal anything.""

I looked at her.

"Did you disclose the payment?""

"No.""

"Did you declare the company as a related-party vendor?""

"No.""

"Did you tell me?""

She shook her head.

I stepped away from the table.

For eleven years, I had believed my wife and brother were two people I could trust without hesitation.

Now they were sitting in front of me, arguing over how much money they had taken.

Daniel stood.

"Marcus, let's be practical. We can fix this.""

"How?""

"We return some of the money. We restructure the consulting agreement. We make sure nobody loses their job.""

Richard looked at him.

"You cannot privately negotiate away a financial investigation.""

Daniel snapped his fingers toward Richard.

"Nobody asked you.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Then let me be very clear. Sterling has suspended all further payments pending review. The matter has been referred to legal counsel.""

Daniel turned back to me.

"Are you going to let him do this?""

I looked at him.

"This isn't about what I let him do.""

"You're the controlling owner!""

"Exactly.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"You really want to destroy your own brother over money?""

I stared at him.

"You destroyed your relationship with me over money.""

His face tightened.

Then he lowered his voice.

"Listen carefully. Dad didn't leave you everything.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Daniel smiled.

"There's another document. A separate agreement. One that changes the ownership structure if certain conditions are met.""

Richard looked up.

"Daniel, what agreement?""

Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a folded piece of paper.

He placed it in front of me.

It was a photocopy of a document bearing my father's signature.

At the top was a heading I had never seen before:

Conditional Transfer of Beneficial Ownership.

My eyes moved down the page.

The agreement appeared to grant Daniel a substantial ownership interest under certain circumstances.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

"Where did you get this?""

Daniel leaned closer.

"From Dad's private office.""

"That office was sealed after he died.""

He smiled.

"Not every door was locked, Marcus.""

I looked at the signature.

It resembled my father's.

But something about the date bothered me.

The document was dated three months after his death.

I looked up.

"Daniel.""

He crossed his arms.

"What?""

"How did Dad sign a document three months after he died?""

His smile vanished.

Richard slowly took the paper.

Then he examined the date.

Denise stood up.

"Daniel, what is he talking about?""

My brother didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Where did you get this document?""

Daniel's eyes moved toward the front door.

And suddenly, I knew.

He wasn't frightened because I had discovered the money.

He was frightened because I had discovered something much worse.

The document wasn't simply false.

May you like

It was evidence.

And someone had helped him create it.
