Chapter 9: The Document That Exposed Them Both

At 8:06 the following morning, Tessa walked into her company's conference room carrying a thick folder.

She had slept less than three hours.

But she wasn't tired enough to make mistakes.

Nora was already there, along with the company's outside attorney, Denise Harper.

Denise was a fifty-two-year-old Black woman who had spent more than twenty years handling commercial disputes and business litigation.

She placed a cup of coffee in front of Tessa.

"Before we do anything, I want to hear exactly what happened.""

Tessa slid the documents across the table.

"Start with these.""

Denise examined the ownership agreement, the payment authorizations, and the loan guarantee.

Her expression grew more serious with every page.

"Did you authorize any of these transactions?""

"No.""

"Did you sign any of these documents?""

"No.""

"Did you give your husband permission to use your electronic signature?""

"Absolutely not.""

Denise nodded.

"Then we're going to preserve everything and establish a clear timeline.""

Nora opened her laptop.

"I've already exported the relevant financial records. I've also requested original copies from the bank and vendors.""

Denise pointed toward the loan guarantee.

"This is particularly important. We need to determine whether the lender relied on the disputed signature and what verification procedures were used.""

Tessa leaned forward.

"What about the equipment?""

"We'll review the security agreement and determine what property was pledged. We should not assume the lender's claims are valid or invalid until we inspect the underlying documents.""

Tessa nodded.

"Understood.""

Denise opened Andre's photograph.

The handwritten note was visible.

If Tessa refuses to sign, use the backup authorization.

She studied it.

"Where did this come from?""

"My brother.""

"Has he explained how he obtained it?""

"Not yet.""

Denise looked at Tessa.

"Have you spoken to him since last night?""

"Only through messages.""

"Then don't confront him alone. We need his explanation documented accurately.""

Tessa leaned back.

She hated that the situation had reached this point.

Her brother had been one of the first people she called when she started her company.

He had helped carry office furniture into her first rented space.

He had stood beside her at her wedding.

And now his signature was appearing on financial documents connected to a disputed loan.

Nora broke the silence.

"There's another thing.""

She opened a folder.

"Remember the $83,000 transferred to Andre?""

Tessa nodded.

"I traced the destination account. It was used to make payments on a commercial property.""

"Whose property?""

Nora turned the screen around.

"Andre's.""

Tessa stared at the address.

Her brother had purchased a small commercial building six months earlier.

She remembered congratulating him.

He had said he finally had enough money saved to make the purchase.

Apparently, the money had come from the same restaurant she had funded.

Denise closed the folder.

"We need to speak with him.""

Tessa picked up her phone.

She sent one message.

Meet me at my office at ten. Bring every document you have.

Andre arrived twenty minutes later.

He wore a gray hoodie, dark jeans, and a worried expression.

He looked at Tessa before sitting down.

"Hey, sis.""

She didn't respond to the greeting.

"Tell me about the $83,000.""

Andre looked at Nora.

Then Denise.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No," Tessa answered.

He lowered his eyes.

Denise introduced herself and explained that she represented Tessa's company.

Andre shifted in his chair.

"Okay.""

Tessa placed the loan guarantee on the table.

"Did you sign this?""

Andre nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did I?""

He looked at the document.

"No.""

"Then why is my signature there?""

Andre rubbed his hands together.

"Miles said you had approved it electronically.""

"Did you see me approve it?""

"No.""

"Did you speak to me about it?""

"No.""

Tessa stared at him.

"Then why did you believe him?""

Andre's face tightened.

"Because he said you were handling the paperwork through Nora.""

Nora looked up.

"I never received an authorization.""

Andre nodded.

"I know that now.""

Denise asked, "What was your role in arranging this loan?""

Andre hesitated.

"Miles approached me about helping him secure additional funding.""

"Why did he need it?""

"He said construction costs had gotten out of control. He needed money to keep the restaurant moving.""

"Did you receive compensation?""

Andre nodded.

"Twenty thousand in consulting fees.""

"And the additional $83,000?""

Andre looked at Tessa.

"That was supposed to be a commission.""

Tessa felt her jaw tighten.

"A commission for what?""

"For arranging the loan and helping him get the property paperwork organized.""

"Which property?""

Andre glanced at Denise.

Then he finally answered.

"The building where Carter House is located.""

Tessa frowned.

"What?""

Andre leaned forward.

"Miles was negotiating with the landlord to purchase the property. He said if the restaurant became profitable, he wanted to own the building too.""

"Did he buy it?""

"No. He was trying to secure an option to purchase it.""

Tessa looked at Nora.

"Did our company finance any part of that?""

Nora opened another spreadsheet.

"Not directly. But the restaurant's funds were used for the option deposit.""

Tessa stared at Andre.

"So my money paid for renovations, and the restaurant's money paid for an option on the building?""

Andre nodded.

"That's what I was told.""

"Who was supposed to own the building?""

Andre looked down.

"Miles.""

Tessa slowly pushed the loan document toward him.

"And who was supposed to pay the loan?""

Andre's voice became almost inaudible.

"The restaurant.""

Denise took notes.

"Mr. Williams, did you know your sister's signature was being used without her authorization?""

Andre shook his head.

"Not at first.""

"When did you discover it?""

"Yesterday.""

Tessa stared at him.

"Why didn't you call me immediately?""

Andre's eyes filled.

"Because I was scared.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

She sat back.

There it was.

The same excuse Miles had used.

The same excuse everyone seemed to have when the money stopped flowing.

Andre continued.

"Miles told me that once the investor came in, everything would be paid back. He said nobody would lose anything.""

"And you believed him?""

Andre nodded.

"I wanted to.""

Tessa looked at the photograph on her phone.

"What about this note?""

Andre pulled out his own phone.

"I found it in Miles's office yesterday. I took a picture because I realized something wasn't right.""

Denise leaned forward.

"Was the document signed?""

"No. It was a handwritten instruction attached to a folder.""

"Who wrote it?""

Andre hesitated.

"I think Miles.""

Tessa looked at him.

"Why do you think?""

"Because I watched him write it.""

Silence filled the room.

Andre continued.

"He told me that if you refused to approve the final transfer, there was another way to release the money.""

Nora frowned.

"What other way?""

Andre reached into his backpack.

He removed a small envelope and placed it on the table.

Inside were printed screenshots of emails and an authorization form.

Tessa opened the envelope.

The first email was from Miles to a person named Calvin Reed, a former administrative contractor who had helped set up the restaurant's payment systems.

The message read:

I need the old authorization credentials restored. The original approval process is slowing everything down. Tessa doesn't need to be involved in every transaction.

Tessa looked at Denise.

"Who is Calvin Reed?""

Nora answered.

"He worked with the restaurant during the first six months of construction.""

Denise examined the email.

"Do you know whether he still has access?""

Nora shook her head.

"I thought his credentials had been disabled.""

She immediately opened her laptop.

A few moments later, her expression changed.

"There's a problem.""

Tessa looked at her.

"What?""

"One of the old administrative credentials was used yesterday afternoon.""

"By whom?""

Nora examined the activity log.

"The system identifies the user as Calvin Reed.""

Andre shook his head.

"That's impossible. Calvin hasn't worked there in months.""

Nora turned the laptop toward Denise.

"The account was used to access the payment authorization portal.""

Tessa's heart began beating faster.

"Did it authorize the $78,000 transfer?""

Nora checked.

"No. That transfer was stopped.""

"Then what did it authorize?""

Nora opened another record.

A new payment request appeared.

It had been submitted at 7:42 that morning.

The amount was $78,000.

The destination account was Carter House Management LLC.

The status showed that the request was awaiting final bank verification.

Tessa stared at the screen.

Miles was still trying.

Even after the opening-night confrontation.

Even after the investor discovered the truth.

Even after the bank began reviewing the previous transactions.

He was still attempting to move the money.

Denise immediately stood.

"Contact the bank's fraud department. Tell them there is a new disputed authorization.""

Nora began typing.

Andre looked sick.

"He told me he was going to stop.""

Tessa turned toward him.

"When?""

"Last night. He said everything was going to be fine.""

Tessa shook her head.

"Everything was fine when he had my money.""

Her phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

She answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice responded.

"Ms. Carter? This is Calvin Reed.""

Tessa sat up.

"How did you get my number?""

"I need to explain something. I just received a message from Mr. Carter.""

"What message?""

"He wants me to confirm that you personally authorized the payment request submitted this morning.""

Tessa looked at Nora.

Nora stopped typing.

Calvin continued.

"I told him I wouldn't do it.""

Tessa's grip tightened around the phone.

"Why are you calling me?""

"Because he threatened to report me for unauthorized access if I didn't cooperate.""

Denise leaned closer.

"Mr. Reed, this is Denise Harper, legal counsel for Ms. Carter's company. Please preserve all communications and do not delete anything.""

Calvin exhaled.

"I will.""

Tessa asked the question that had been troubling her.

"Did you give Miles access to the old credentials?""

There was a pause.

Then Calvin answered.

"No. But I know who did.""

Tessa looked at Nora.

"Who?""

Calvin lowered his voice.

"Your brother.""

Andre stood up.

"That's a lie!""

Tessa turned toward him.

Calvin continued.

"And I have the original email proving it.""

Andre's face went pale.

Denise slowly closed the folder.

"Mr. Reed, send the original email directly to our legal team.""

"I will.""

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Tessa looked at her brother.

"Andre, what did you do?""

He shook his head.

"I didn't know he was going to use it for this.""

"Did you give him the credentials?""

Andre covered his face.

"I thought he needed them to access the old vendor records.""

Tessa stood.

"Did you give him my company's authorization credentials?""

Andre didn't answer.

His silence was enough.

And just when Tessa thought she had finally uncovered the entire scheme, Nora's laptop chimed again.

A new email had arrived.

The sender was Calvin Reed.

The subject line read:

*THE ORIGINAL PLAN — BEFORE THE RESTAURANT OPENED.*

Denise opened the attachment.

The first page contained a message from Miles.

The second contained a list of proposed transactions.

But the third page made Tessa stop breathing.

It was a draft agreement dated four months earlier.

And it named Sienna Brooks as the proposed majority owner of Carter House Management LLC.

Miles hadn't simply planned to remove Tessa from the business.

He had planned to transfer control to his mistress.

And he had started making those arrangements long before the restaurant opened.

Tessa slowly looked at Andre.

"Did you know about this?""

Andre shook his head.

"No.""

She turned back to the document.

At the bottom was another name.

Not Miles.

Not Sienna.

A third person had signed as the witness to the proposed transfer.

*Denise Harper stopped reading.*

Her eyes fixed on the signature.

Then she looked at Tessa.

"Do you know who this is?""

Tessa stared at the name.

It belonged to someone she had trusted with her company's most important financial documents.

Someone who had attended family dinners.

Someone who knew exactly how much money Tessa had invested.

Someone who had been helping Miles from the beginning.

May you like

And the person whose signature appeared beneath the agreement was—

*Nora Ellis.*
