Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Hers

"Because you have no idea what you're about to find.""

Lionel's words hung in the kitchen.

Renee stared at him, her phone pressed against her chest.

For twenty years, she had watched this man handle problems with the same expression. A slight tightening around his mouth. A hand rubbing the back of his neck. A calm voice that made everyone else feel unreasonable for asking questions.

But tonight, something was different.

He wasn't trying to explain.

He was trying to stop her from looking.

"Move away from me, Lionel.""

"Renee, I'm asking you to listen.""

"And I'm telling you to move.""

Jada stood beside the staircase, clutching her enrollment folder.

Lionel looked toward her.

"Jada, go upstairs.""

"No.""

"Don't start.""

"Then stop telling everyone to be quiet whenever they ask you something.""

Lionel's eyes narrowed.

Renee unlocked her phone and opened Beverly's message again.

"The old family email account," she said.

"What account is she talking about?""

Lionel rubbed his forehead.

"Your sister-in-law is stirring up trouble.""

"Beverly is your sister.""

"Exactly. And I know how she operates.""

"Then tell me what she means.""

"There are old documents in that account. Nothing important.""

"Why would you be afraid of me seeing something unimportant?""

Lionel didn't answer.

Renee walked toward the kitchen table and sat down.

"Jada, bring your laptop.""

Lionel immediately objected.

"Don't involve her.""

Jada looked at her mother.

"Which laptop?""

"The silver one in your room.""

Jada went upstairs.

Lionel lowered his voice.

"Renee, please. We can settle this privately.""

"You had seventeen years to settle it privately.""

"You're making this bigger than it needs to be.""

Renee looked up.

"You have a seventeen-year-old son with another woman. You took our daughter's tuition money. You rented an apartment. You stood in front of our family and ordered Jada to thank you.""

She paused.

"What part of this is too big?""

Lionel pulled out a chair.

"Sit down and let me explain.""

"I'm already sitting.""

He looked away.

When Jada returned with her laptop, Renee opened the browser.

She remembered the email account.

It was an old address they had created years earlier for family paperwork. School forms, insurance documents, tax receipts, and scanned copies of important records had once been stored there.

Lionel had insisted on keeping the password because he handled most of their household administration.

Renee tried the password she remembered.

It didn't work.

She tried another.

Access denied.

"Did you change it?"" she asked.

Lionel stared at the screen.

"I don't remember.""

"That's interesting.""

"Renee, stop.""

Jada leaned over the laptop.

"Mom, try the recovery option.""

They clicked it.

A recovery email appeared, partially hidden.

The address began with a letter T.

Renee slowly turned toward Lionel.

"Tasha?""

He stood up.

"That's an old recovery address.""

"Why is another woman's email connected to our family account?""

"Because I used it once.""

"For what?""

"Business.""

Renee shook her head.

"Everything with you is business.""

Jada clicked the recovery option.

A verification code was sent.

Lionel reached across the table.

"Don't.""

Renee caught his wrist.

"Don't touch my daughter's laptop.""

He pulled away.

The room fell silent.

A minute later, Renee's phone rang.

Beverly.

Renee answered and put her on speaker.

"Where are you?"" Renee asked.

"At home.""

"Did you know Tasha's email was connected to our family account?""

There was a pause.

"Yes.""

Lionel closed his eyes.

Renee continued.

"What documents are in there?""

Beverly exhaled.

"The original insurance paperwork. Some school records. And a document Lionel asked me to scan several years ago.""

"What document?""

"A consent form.""

"For what?""

Beverly's voice dropped.

"For Mason.""

Renee looked at Lionel.

"What consent form?""

Beverly hesitated.

"Renee, I need to tell you something. But I don't want to do it over the phone.""

"Why?""

"Because Lionel isn't telling you everything.""

Lionel grabbed his phone.

"Hang up.""

Beverly heard him.

"Don't you dare tell her to hang up.""

He disconnected the call.

Renee stared at the blank screen.

"Did you use my signature?""

Lionel sat down again.

"I didn't forge anything.""

"Then why won't you answer?""

"Some of those forms were routine.""

"Did you sign my name?""

He looked at her.

"I handled the paperwork.""

Renee's voice became almost inaudible.

"That wasn't my question.""

Jada slowly closed the laptop.

"Mom, look.""

She had noticed a notification.

The recovery email had arrived on the old account.

They had managed to regain access through Renee's secondary phone number.

The inbox contained hundreds of messages.

Most were ordinary family correspondence.

Then Jada spotted a folder labeled MASON.

She clicked it.

Inside were scanned school documents, medical forms, insurance records, and photographs.

Renee opened the oldest file.

It was dated seventeen years earlier.

The document listed Lionel as Mason's biological father.

The mother's name was Tasha Williams.

But the signature at the bottom belonged to Renee Carter.

Renee leaned closer.

Her stomach tightened.

She knew that signature.

It looked exactly like hers.

Except she had never signed it.

"What's that?"" Jada whispered.

Renee enlarged the document.

It was a medical authorization form naming Renee as Mason's stepmother and emergency contact.

Her signature was dated six months before she had even heard the name Tasha.

Jada looked at her mother.

"Mom, did you know?""

Renee shook her head.

"No.""

Lionel stood abruptly.

"That's old paperwork. It doesn't mean anything.""

Renee looked at him.

"You used my name?""

"I was trying to get things organized.""

"You made me an emergency contact for a child I didn't know existed?""

"It was just a form.""

Renee laughed in disbelief.

"Just a form?""

She scrolled farther.

There was another document.

A school enrollment record.

Another signature.

Another use of Renee's personal information.

Then a scanned insurance application.

Renee read the date.

Her hands began to shake.

"Jada.""

"What?""

"Look at the address.""

The insurance application listed the Westerville apartment.

But the policyholder wasn't Lionel.

It was Renee Carter.

The same Renee sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked at her husband.

"Why is my name on an insurance policy for that apartment?""

Lionel didn't answer.

Then a new email appeared.

The sender was Beverly.

The subject line read:

*I SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU YEARS AGO.*

Renee opened it.

There was one sentence.

Lionel didn't just use your name on the paperwork. He told Tasha you knew about Mason and had agreed to help raise him.

Renee slowly raised her eyes.

Lionel was standing completely still.

May you like

And suddenly she understood why Tasha had never contacted her.

Tasha had believed Renee was part of the arrangement.
