Chapter 9: The Midnight Reunion at Blackthorn House

The drive to Blackthorn House felt endless.

Rain hammered against the windshield. Elina sat beside me, gripping the silver key Amelia had given us.

Amelia followed in another vehicle.

We had contacted one trusted detective outside the local department, but he warned us that any official operation could alert Richard's people.

We agreed on a simple plan.

Get Lily out.

Find my mother.

Then expose everyone involved.

But as the road narrowed and the trees closed around us, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were walking into another trap.

“Marcus,” Elina whispered.

I glanced at her.

“What?””

“Whatever happens tonight, don't let Richard separate us again.””

I reached for her hand.

“He won't.””

She looked at me.

“You promised that before.””

I had no answer.

Fourteen months earlier, I had believed my wife was dead.

Now she was sitting beside me, alive, injured, and terrified.

I squeezed her fingers.

“This time, I won't let go.””

Blackthorn House appeared through the rain.

It was an enormous abandoned mansion surrounded by iron gates. Most of the windows were dark, but warm light glowed from the upper floor.

A black SUV was parked outside.

I recognized it immediately.

Ethan's vehicle.

I stopped the car.

“Stay here for a moment.””

Elina caught my arm.

“Marcus.””

“I'll check the entrance.””

She shook her head.

“We go together.””

I nodded.

We stepped through the gate.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and old wood.

A grandfather clock stood in the entrance hall.

Its hands had stopped at midnight.

I noticed a trail of muddy footprints leading toward the dining room.

Then a familiar voice called out.

“Marcus.””

My father stepped from the shadows.

He was pale, but standing.

A bandage covered his chest.

“Dad!””

I rushed toward him.

He raised one hand.

“Slowly. I don't want you walking into another trap.””

I stopped.

“Where's Lily?””

“Upstairs.””

“Is she safe?””

“For now.””

I looked past him.

“Where's Richard?””

My father glanced toward the dining room.

“Waiting for you.””

Elina stepped closer.

“Where is Margaret?””

My father looked at her.

“She's alive.””

Elina covered her mouth.

“Then take us to her.””

He shook his head.

“Not yet.””

I felt anger rising again.

“Dad, enough secrets! My daughter is upstairs, my wife was imprisoned beneath my house, and you're still deciding what I deserve to know?””

My father lowered his eyes.

“You're right.””

He reached into his coat and removed a small photograph.

It showed a woman sitting beside a fireplace.

She looked older, but I recognized her immediately.

My mother.

“She's been here for six months,” he said.

“Why didn't you bring her home?””

“Because Richard controls the documents proving her identity. If she comes out of hiding before those records are secured, he'll have her arrested under a false identity.””

I shook my head.

“This is insane.””

My father nodded.

“I know.””

Then he led us toward the dining room.

Richard sat at the head of a long wooden table.

A glass of whiskey rested beside his hand.

Ethan stood near the fireplace.

Victoria was sitting beside him.

Daniel guarded the door.

And Lily was in a chair near the window.

The moment she saw me, she jumped up.

“DADDY!””

I ran toward her.

Richard raised a hand.

A security guard stepped between us.

“Not so fast.””

I stopped.

Lily began crying.

“Daddy, I want to go home!””

“I know, sweetheart. I'm here.””

Richard smiled.

“Beautiful family moment.””

I glared at him.

“Let her go.””

“First, the drive.””

I held up the USB.

“Give me Lily.””

Richard shook his head.

“You've never been particularly good at negotiations, Marcus.””

He leaned back.

“Place it on the table.””

I did.

Richard picked it up and inserted it into a laptop.

A list of encrypted files appeared.

He smiled.

“Excellent.””

My father stepped forward.

“Richard, it's over.””

Richard laughed.

“Arthur, you should have stayed dead.””

I looked at my father.

“Arthur?””

Richard continued.

“You really thought you could disappear and leave me holding the entire mess?””

My father said nothing.

Richard opened a folder.

Then his smile vanished.

“These aren't the original files.””

I kept my expression neutral.

“What do you mean?””

He turned the laptop toward me.

The files contained photographs of Richard meeting with Victoria, bank records, and copies of the fraudulent transfers.

But the final folder was different.

It contained a video.

Richard clicked it.

My mother's face appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in a small room, wearing a blue cardigan.

Her voice trembled.

“If anyone is watching this, my name is Margaret Hale. I am the mother of Marcus, Ethan, and Amelia.””

I stopped breathing.

She continued.

“I have spent years hiding because the man who claimed to protect our family became the greatest danger to it.””

Richard slammed the laptop shut.

“Turn that off!””

My father stepped toward him.

“You've lost.””

Richard stood.

“No. You have.””

He pulled a remote control from his pocket.

A small red light blinked.

I looked toward the ceiling.

Then I heard a faint mechanical sound.

The security shutters began descending over the windows.

Richard smiled.

“This house has been wired for years. Every door is locked. Every window is sealed.””

Ethan stepped away from the fireplace.

“Richard, you said nobody would get hurt.””

Richard looked at him.

“I said you would get what you deserved.””

Ethan shook his head.

“What does that mean?””

Richard placed a document on the table.

“Your inheritance.””

Ethan picked it up.

His expression changed as he read.

“You promised me the company.””

Richard shrugged.

“The company belongs to Marcus.””

“You promised!””

“And you believed me?””

Ethan stared at him.

Richard leaned forward.

“You were useful because you hated your brother. I gave you someone to blame. That's all.””

Ethan's face twisted with rage.

“You used me.””

Richard took a sip of whiskey.

“Everyone uses everyone, Ethan.””

Then he turned toward me.

“Now, Marcus. The real reason you're here.””

He placed another document on the table.

It was an old trust agreement.

My mother's name appeared at the top.

Below it was a list of beneficiaries.

Marcus Hale.

Ethan Cole.

Amelia Hale.

And one final name.

Lily Hale.

Richard smiled.

“Your daughter inherited the controlling interest in the original family trust when she was born.””

I stared at the document.

“That can't be true.””

“It is. Your mother arranged it.””

Elina stepped forward.

“Why does that matter?””

Richard's smile widened.

“Because the trust contains everything your father and I built. Property, investments, overseas accounts. Billions.””

I looked at Lily.

She was holding her pink rabbit so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

Richard continued.

“And only the child's legal guardian can authorize the transfer.””

I understood.

He didn't want Lily because of something she knew.

He wanted her signature.

Or mine.

“You want me to sign away her inheritance?””

“Exactly.””

I looked at the document.

Then I looked at Richard.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“Think carefully.””

“I said no.””

He nodded toward the security guard.

The man moved behind Lily and placed a hand on her shoulder.

She screamed.

“DON'T TOUCH MY DAUGHTER!””

Elina lunged forward, but Daniel blocked her.

Then Ethan suddenly stepped between the guard and Lily.

“Get your hands off her.””

Richard stared at him.

“Move.””

“No.””

For the first time, my brother looked like the boy who had once pulled me from a frozen pond.

He pushed the guard away.

“She's my niece.””

Richard raised his gun.

“Then you've outlived your usefulness.””

A gunshot exploded.

Ethan collapsed.

Lily screamed.

I rushed toward my brother as he fell beside the table.

Blood spread across his shirt.

“Ethan!””

He grabbed my wrist.

“Marcus…”

I pressed my hand against the wound.

“Stay with me!””

He struggled to breathe.

“I didn't know… I swear I didn't know about the little girl.””

I looked at him.

“Don't talk.””

His eyes moved toward Lily.

“Get her out.””

Then Richard grabbed Elina by the arm and pulled her toward the staircase.

“Enough family reunions!””

He pointed his gun at her.

“Now, Marcus, you're going to sign the papers.””

I looked toward my father.

He was standing beside the fireplace, holding something behind his back.

A small black remote.

Then I heard a woman's voice from the upper floor.

“Richard, put the gun down.””

Everyone froze.

A woman appeared at the top of the staircase.

She wore a blue cardigan.

Her hair was silver.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

My mother.

Margaret Hale.

She looked directly at me.

Then she said the words I had waited twenty years to hear.

“Marcus, my son. I'm home.””

Richard slowly turned toward her.

And for the first time that night, the man who had controlled our entire family looked genuinely terrified.

Because my mother was holding the original signed confession.

And behind her stood three police officers.

The first officer raised his weapon.

“Richard Cole! Put the gun down!””

Richard didn't move.

Instead, he looked at Lily.

Then he smiled.

“Before anyone arrests me, perhaps you should ask Margaret what really happened to her daughter.””

My mother closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

“What is he talking about?””

She took a trembling breath.

Then she pointed toward Elina.

“Marcus, there's something about your wife that you still don't know.””

May you like

The room fell silent.

And Elina began to cry.
