Chapter 4: The Secret Inside the Envelope
Desmond stared at his mother.
“Mom, what did you find?””
Margaret stepped inside the salon, clutching the envelope against her chest.
“I wasn't sure whether I should bring this here,” she said.
“But after what happened this morning, I think you need to know.””
Nadia immediately stepped out of the office.
“Margaret, this isn't a good time.””
The older woman looked at her daughter-in-law.
“I know, Nadia. That's why I wanted to speak to Desmond privately.””
Nadia let out a short laugh.
“Privately? In my salon?””
Desmond moved toward his mother.
“Let's go into the office.””
Nadia stepped in front of him.
“Absolutely not. Whatever this is, you can discuss it here.””
“Move, Nadia.””
His voice wasn't loud, but something in it made her hesitate.
Margaret followed him into the office.
Desmond closed the door.
For several seconds, his mother simply stood there, looking at the locked drawer.
Then she placed the envelope on the desk.
“I found these behind the wardrobe in my bedroom.””
Desmond opened it.
Inside were photocopies of three documents, a bank statement, and a small handwritten note.
He examined the first document.
It was a financial authorization form.
His mother's name appeared at the bottom.
So did her address.
But the date caught his attention.
It was six months earlier.
“Mom, what is this?””
Margaret pulled out a chair.
“Nadia brought some papers to my house last spring. She said she needed my signature because the salon supplier required a family reference.””
Desmond looked up.
“A family reference?””
Margaret nodded.
“She said it was just to confirm that she had someone supporting her business. I didn't understand all the details.””
“Did you read everything before signing?””
Margaret looked embarrassed.
“I asked her what it was. She said it wasn't a loan, and it wouldn't cost me anything.””
Desmond looked down again.
The document contained a section authorizing a financial guarantee connected to a credit facility.
His mother's signature appeared beneath it.
He turned to the next page.
This one was worse.
It listed a potential security interest in Margaret's property, subject to additional legal requirements.
“Mom, did you know your house was mentioned in this agreement?””
Her eyes widened.
“My house?””
Desmond pushed the paper toward her.
She read the heading slowly.
Then her hand went to her mouth.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
He pulled the bank statement from the envelope.
Several transactions had been highlighted.
One transfer was dated two months earlier.
Another was dated just three weeks ago.
The amounts were not small.
He checked the account number.
It belonged to the credit facility Nadia had opened for the salon.
“Mom, where did you get these?””
“I found them in a drawer beneath my winter blankets. I thought Nadia had accidentally left them when she visited.””
Desmond rubbed his forehead.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Margaret looked down.
“Because I didn't want you to think badly of your wife.””
The words hurt more than he expected.
He sat beside her.
“Mom, you don't have to protect me from the truth.””
She reached for his hand.
“I know you love her.””
“I do.””
“And I know you worked very hard to build a good marriage.””
Desmond squeezed her fingers.
“But?””
Margaret swallowed.
“But I don't remember agreeing to let anyone use my house to secure a business loan.””
Desmond looked at the paperwork again.
Before he could respond, the office door opened.
Nadia walked in.
She had apparently found a spare key.
Her eyes immediately landed on the documents.
“I told you not to bring those papers here.””
Margaret stood.
“I didn't know what they meant.””
“You signed them.””
“I signed what you told me was a reference.””
“You should have read them.””
Desmond slowly rose from his chair.
“Don't speak to her like that.””
Nadia turned toward him.
“She agreed to help me. Now she's pretending she didn't understand?””
“Did you explain that her house could be used as security?””
Nadia looked away.
“I explained the paperwork.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
“I didn't force her to sign.””
Margaret's voice trembled.
“You told me I was helping my daughter-in-law start a business. You said there was no risk.””
Nadia folded her arms.
“And you wanted to help.””
Desmond picked up the bank statement.
“Why were there withdrawals and transfers connected to this account?””
Nadia's expression changed.
“Because the salon needed money.””
“I paid for the salon.””
“You paid for the opening.””
“And now you're telling me you used my mother's property to support additional borrowing?””
“I was investing in the business!””
“Without telling me?””
“You wouldn't have agreed!””
Desmond stared at her.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Margaret quietly asked the question neither of them wanted to answer.
“Nadia, is my house in danger?””
Nadia looked at her.
“No. Not if everything goes according to plan.””
Desmond felt a chill move through him.
“What plan?””
Nadia opened her mouth.
Then she glanced at the locked drawer.
Her phone began ringing.
She checked the screen and rejected the call.
A second later, it rang again.
This time, Desmond saw the name.
*Graham — Finance.*
Nadia quickly silenced it.
Desmond pointed toward the phone.
“Answer it.””
“It's a business call.””
“Then answer it.””
“I'm not discussing my business with you.””
Margaret picked up the envelope.
“Desmond, let's go home.””
He nodded.
But as he escorted his mother toward the door, Nadia called after him.
“If you walk out with those papers, don't expect me to keep explaining myself!””
Desmond stopped.
He turned around.
“I don't need another explanation from you right now. I need the truth.””
Then he left with his mother.
Outside, Margaret held his arm as they walked toward his truck.
“Son, please don't let this destroy your marriage.””
He opened the passenger door.
“Mom, someone used your trust without making sure you understood what you were signing.””
She looked down at the envelope.
“I just wanted to help her.””
Desmond helped her into the seat.
“I know.””
He closed the door and walked around to the driver's side.
But before he could start the engine, his phone received an email.
It was from the finance company.
The subject line read:
