Chapter 7: The Invention She Tried to Sell

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Zoe stared at the loan agreement as if the words might rearrange themselves into something less horrifying.

Her robot.

Her invention.

The machine she had built from discarded electronics and countless hours of work.

Someone had used it as collateral for an $8,500 loan.

And that someone was Denise.

"That's impossible," Zoe whispered.

Denise reached for the papers.

"Give me those.""

Isaiah pulled them away.

"Don't touch them.""

"You don't understand what you're looking at.""

"Then explain it.""

Denise looked at Zoe.

"Sweetheart, I never intended for anything bad to happen.""

Zoe shook her head.

"Don't call me sweetheart.""

Denise flinched.

"I was trying to solve a financial problem.""

"With my robot?""

"I thought it would be temporary.""

"You signed a contract using something I built!""

"You're seventeen, Zoe. You don't understand how these things work.""

"Then why did you put my name on it?""

That question stopped Denise.

Isaiah examined the document again.

There was a date beside the signature.

April twenty-sixth.

He looked at the next page.

"Marcus signed this too?""

Denise nodded.

"He needed security for the loan.""

"And you gave him my daughter's prototype?""

"I thought the competition would provide her with another opportunity.""

Isaiah looked up.

"That's not an answer.""

Denise pressed both hands against her forehead.

"I needed the money.""

"For what?""

She looked at Malik.

He immediately stood straighter.

"Why are you looking at me?""

Denise swallowed.

"Some of it went toward the business.""

"What business?"" Isaiah asked.

"Malik's.""

Malik's face changed.

"Mom?""

Denise continued, her voice becoming increasingly desperate.

"He wanted to start a photography and aerial inspection company. He had equipment expenses, registration fees, marketing costs. He needed help getting started.""

Malik stared at her.

"I never asked you to borrow eight thousand dollars.""

"You wanted the drone.""

"I wanted a drone! I didn't tell you to take a loan!""

"You said you wanted to build something of your own!""

Malik threw his hands up.

"That doesn't mean you should use Zoe's robot!""

Zoe slowly stepped backward.

She felt strangely detached from the conversation.

For months, she had thought her biggest problem was not having enough money to build a competitive machine.

Now she was discovering that someone had treated her invention as an object they could trade.

"Did Marcus ever see my robot?"" she asked.

Denise looked at her.

"What?""

"Did he see it before you signed this?""

Denise hesitated.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Once.""

"Where?""

"In the garage.""

Zoe remembered a Saturday afternoon in April.

She had been at school for a robotics workshop. Denise had told her that a repairman needed to check the electrical outlets in the garage.

When Zoe returned, Denise had been standing near the workbench with a man she didn't recognize.

The man had smiled and introduced himself as Marcus.

He had asked several questions about the robot.

At the time, Zoe had been proud.

She had explained how the arm worked, how the sensors detected objects, and how the machine could separate recyclable materials.

Marcus had seemed impressed.

He had even asked whether she planned to patent it someday.

Now she understood why.

"That was him," Zoe whispered.

Denise nodded.

"He thought it had potential.""

Isaiah's expression darkened.

"Did you tell him Zoe hadn't given you permission to use it?""

Denise looked away.

"I told him I was responsible for the household.""

"That isn't permission.""

"I thought I could make everything right before anyone found out.""

Isaiah picked up the agreement.

"How?""

Denise began crying.

"I was going to pay him back.""

"With what?""

She didn't answer.

Isaiah looked at the amount again.

"Eight thousand five hundred dollars. Where did all that money go?""

Denise finally sat down.

"Marcus offered to invest in Malik's business. He said he could get him contracts with local companies. He needed an initial payment to secure equipment and advertising.""

Malik shook his head.

"Mom, I never had any contracts.""

"You were supposed to.""

"Who told you that?""

"Marcus!""

Malik looked at Isaiah.

"I thought Mom was paying for the drone with her savings.""

Isaiah closed his eyes briefly.

"So did Zoe.""

The words hung in the room.

Then Zoe picked up the agreement.

There was another section she hadn't noticed.

It stated that the prototype could be inspected and transferred if the loan remained unpaid beyond a specified date.

Her fingers tightened.

"What's the deadline?""

Isaiah found the paragraph.

"Tomorrow.""

Denise nodded.

"Marcus said he'd come for it if I didn't pay.""

Zoe looked at her.

"Come for what?""

"The robot.""

"But he can't take it!""

"Zoe, please—"

"You can't sell something that belongs to me!""

Denise wiped her face.

"I know.""

"No, you don't!""

Zoe threw the document onto the table.

"You knew I was preparing for this competition. You knew I needed the robot. You knew Dad sent money. You knew everything!""

Denise lowered her head.

Isaiah picked up his phone.

"I'm contacting an attorney.""

Denise looked up sharply.

"An attorney?""

"Yes.""

"You wouldn't do that to me.""

Isaiah stared at her.

"You signed a financial agreement using a minor's invention without her permission.""

"I was your wife!""

"And she was your responsibility while I was away.""

Denise began shaking her head.

"You're going to destroy this family over a machine?""

Isaiah's voice became cold.

"No. You started destroying this family when you decided my daughter was worth less than your son.""

He turned toward Zoe.

"Go upstairs. Take photographs of every component, every diagram, and every piece of documentation you have.""

Zoe nodded.

As she climbed the stairs, she heard Denise whisper:

"Isaiah, if you contact a lawyer, Marcus will tell them everything.""

Isaiah stopped.

"Everything about what?""

Denise looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

Then she said something that made him slowly turn around.

"Marcus didn't just lend me money.""

"What else?""

"He has copies of Zoe's engineering files.""

Zoe stopped halfway up the stairs.

"What?""

Denise looked toward her.

"He said he wanted to evaluate the design.""

Isaiah's face went pale.

"How did he get those files?""

May you like

Denise lowered her eyes.

"I gave them to him.""
